Opting to show its latest concept car at the Shanghai Auto Show speaks to a shift in markets for Citroen. The French auto-manufacturer whose primary theater has been Europe has of late been struggling to retain market share. With the debut of the new Wild Rubis DS concept at the upcoming Shanghai Show, Citroen looks ready to shift gears to the emerging Asian market.

Wild Rubis, a name that sounds more like a wild flower than concept car, represents "the forerunner of the future DS SUV" according to Citroen. The company's DS3, DS4, DS5 and the Numéro 9 concept car are said to directly influence the Wild Rubis sporty, SUV styling.

Making a "discreet first appearance" in France ahead of the Shanghai showing, the DS Wild Rubis is graced with sculptural, fluid design elements on profile, with a muscular line details running from front haunches to rear.

Citroen wants everyone to particularly notice the attention paid to the grille. LED headlights, comprised of three mobile lighting modules are grouped in a setback formation and surrounded by scrolling indicator lights. At the edge is a “tuning fork” shaped light that trails out to the front wheel arch.

The rear is nothing short of an Acura in terms of angular overtones, with a hint of Land Rover Evoque via the wraparound window and rear wing, a dab of Mitsubishi and a sprinkling of Toureg around the edges. Overall, the Wild Rubis gets marks for employing sensual yet muscular Francais style elements and for the finished overall design.

Compared to its siblings the Wild Rubis’ jewellery-like demeanor is a mix of SUV functionality and upper-class overtones. With a wheelbase of 2.9 meters (9.5 ft), an overall length of 4.7 meters (15.4 ft) long and standing 1.59 meters (5.26 ft) tall the new DS looks to be mimicking proportions of the North American SUV. On the corners 21-inch wheels mounted on spiraled alloy rims should keep the thing in check during sport utility vehicle outings.

According to Citroen, the Wild Rubis’ interior will be “feature rich” with all the necessary executive class goodies and tech gadgetry. Built as a hybrid the Wild Rubis will be shown in all its glory at the Shanghai Auto Show next week, where we'll be on the ground to bring you more details.
