Fujitsu's new resistive multi-touch panel detects finger and stylus input simultaneously
Fujitsu has announced the release of multi-input resistive touch panels with the ability to detect simultaneous inputs. This means that potentially you could have input coming from your finger and from a stylus at the very same time.
While multi-touch is nothing new to most readers (especially those with a taste for Apple products), it should be clarified that this functionality is normally associated with capacitive touch screens and not resistive panels like these new ones from Fujitsu.
In layman's terms, screens like those found on iPhones or iPads use capacitive material to detect changes in electrical charge that occur when the device is touched. Resistive screens however, react to pressure from your finger.
Fujitsu's panels can handle both single-tap and multi-touch gestures, and of varying pressure and varying materials (gloves, pens, light finger touch). In the press release Fujitsu points to a growing use of touch panels, not just in the smartphone industry, but also in POS facilities, kiosk, and banking systems.
I can't help but wonder what a Fujitsu-made iPad might look like. What's that you say? Fujitsu already made an iPad?
