Apple ships 64-bit Power Mac G5
August 20, 2003 Apple has begun shipping the two single processor models of its Power Mac G5. First announced in June this year, the arrival of the world's fastest personal computer, which features a 64-bit desktop processor and the industry's first 1 GHz front-side bus, will be completed when the dual 2.0 GHz model ships later this month.
The Power Mac G5 is the first personal computer to utilize 64-bit processing technology for unprecedented memory expansion and advanced 64-bit computation and runs existing 32-bit applications natively.
According to Apple's press release, orders for over 100,000 Power Mac G5s have been received since its introduction on June 23.
The 1.6GHz Power Mac G5 costs AUD$3,599, the 1.8GHz version costs AUD$4,499 and the Dual 2GHz Power Mac G5 will sell for AUD$5,599.
