correct me if im wrong, but isnt Bertrand Piccard flying around the world with an all electric plane just at the moment?

Just a teeny point, but the first men to fly the Atantic non-stop were Alcock and Brown in a British Vickers Vimy. Lindbergh was the first to fly SOLO across the Atlantic.

yes on his way to morocco as soon as a weather window opens

While an interesting project, and I certainly wish him much success, how does he "emulate" Lindbergh's historic flight with refueling in flight?
While testing a new concept, it is not the same as Lindbergh's feat.

Piccard is doing the around the world flight much as Wiley Post did, in stages. Piccard will fly as far as he can, then land and get a supplemental charge to "top off" his battery pack, as the solar array can't supply enough power to completely recharge his batteries. He will then take off and fly to the next scheduled stop, so his flight will probably take quite a few days to complete (Post completed his flight in seven days). Solar cell technology is quite a way from being able to power a non-stop around the world flight.

sounds like it would take about 3 weeks, i hope the thing has autopilot or more than one pilot
piccard -that is a solar glider
"The plan is to circumnavigate the globe with several pilots in relay, flying above cloud cover during the day and at lower altitude at night sometime in 2012."

The around the world flight for Bertrand Piccard's Solar Impulse is scheduled for 2014. I don't think any of his flights have been comparable to crossing the Atlantic (yet).

This is essentially an in-flight "re-fueled" trip. Doesn't qualify for accolades.

This seems like a lot of complication for something that does not come near the performance of commercial jets. I think it's more practical to have jets fueled by hydrogen (generated by nuclear, solar, wind, hydro etc) or alcohol from biological sources.

A lot of comments on the angle of the storybut don't forget the actual story. I think it's pretty damn cool, one more step forward in our evolution.
