If we allow modified humans into the Olympic games, then we have changed the nature of the games. This is why the runner with the artificial leg should not have been allowed to run during the last Olympics (although emotionally it was a great idea and quite an accomplishment). The Olympics were created as a measure of the how far in excellence the human organism itself can go.
I love the idea of special olympics, and maybe even a new set of games to test people with artificial limbs against normal runners (sports of all types). But the original goal of the Olympic games is lost when we start allowing augmented humans.
Just why do they eliminate people from using enhancement producing drugs in the games? It is a cheat. Why did they eliminate the certain type of swimwear that was proven to decrease drag on swimmers? It was considered a cheat... an addition to the human experience.
A new set of sicentific olympics would be a better idea to see how far augmented humans could go. This would make a whole new area of competition and games. Eventually there might not be enough normal humans to make the original Olympics viable!

The 2056 Olympics will look like a bombed out Hiroshima and Nagasaki. There will be nothing but ruins and rubble left of this earth -- nothing worth competing over by then.

If A.I. hasn't killed us all by then, perhaps tiny wireless cameras the athletes can wear without impacting performance but gives viewer amazing first hand experience. Of course real-time 8K VR telepresence everywhere. Automated camera drones for unique footage of athletes in cycling, rowing, marathon, etc. All forms of performance measurement (length of shot put throw, 100 yard dash order and times, etc.) will be done through automation to meticulous detail - China and Russia will try to hack these systems. Use of robots for groundskeeping and security of Olympic village and venues. Opening ceremony will use automated swarms to create amazing visuals. I could go on...

@technolust....those are all ways of how the Games might run and be presented to spectators. None of those address the articles point in terms of how the ATHLETES and/or events (which IS the games) might change.

It's time to remember what the Olympics is FOR. I don't mean what the press releases say; what it's really for is... entertainment and the money to be made from spectators. There is no hope for an Olympics that shows "athletes" who are less capable than the potential spectators; if the Games are to survive, they will have to allow a measure of enhancement that makes the contestants exceptional. It might be very difficult to make rules for that at a time when "enhancement" is evolving faster than the time scale of training.

Money, Power, and Control, all struggling for "Gold", gone are the days of natural/ or perhaps supernatural demigods, primarily Greek athletes. But how do we know and how can it be proven if that even was a level playing field at that time?

Is it just me or do the Olympics seem less and less relevant every year? It seems that back in the 80's and 90's when television watching was still something a family did it was fun to watch them, now with instant video of anything anytime no one that I know seems to care at all anymore. And with all the scandals and cheating and news of how hosting the games is a huge financial and environmental burden on the host city, I wonder how much longer they can keep it going...

I keep hoping that the human race will get over this constant need to compete and start working together to fix the problems we face. The Olympics is a vast waste of time, money and resources and generator of huge quantities of waste and greenhouse emissions. The planet really can't afford this pointless exercise any longer.

The Olympics will be the children of the wealthy because mom and dad dropped a fortune on genetically manipulating their child to be a champion to stroke their egos.
