They would be better off defining what meat is pastured or “free range” and what is lot feed, caged, barn, or factory fattened. Let’s do more than just fence in profits.
Bob
They should also label country of origin, where it is processed and the levels of antibiotics and steroids.

I welcome this as a start.
Food labeling has become a joke, looked at a package of frozen meatballs and in big bold letters it claims “Real Meatballs”
Reading the ingredients with all the soy and other fillers how can they call those “Real” anything.

A desperate gasp of a (hopefully) dying industry. I look forward to the day when meat is lab grown.

Should be called what it is.
ljaques
How about calling them Lmeat and Lbeef, indicating a lab source and a suggestion as to what they're supposed to be?
I doubt I'll be eating Soylent Green, lbeef, or lmeat any time soon.

I've always been told by engineer types that the world always has a way of adapting to new technology. In this case it's small business going after big. It appears it may take a little longer.

Perhaps meat from animals should be labelled 'meat from a dead animal' and the other 'healthier meat'.
An occasional 'real' meat eater and really like the idea of more 'artificial' meat especially if its healthier choice, lower cost, better for the planet and tastes the same - what's not to like?
Too many vested interests here from the cattle producers etc.
Trylon
I don't believe the cattle lobby for a moment. They don't care about allaying confusion on the part of the consumer. They're just trying to protect their market. Sorry, guys. If test tube protein has the same taste and texture and is at least comparable in cost, I'll switch in a heartbeat. In fact, I suspect it'll cost less when it reaches full production. It's a lot easier and less resource-intensive to grow muscle fibers in a vat instead of growing a whole animal - bones, viscera, brains and all. That's all wasteful, unnecessary by-product.
