British architectural studio Horden Cherry Lee has installed its sixteenth Micro-Compact Home overlooking Lake Maggiore in Switzerland. The micro-dwelling was flown in by helicopter last month to accommodate the owner’s last minute visiting guests and was fully installed in just 4 minutes and 9 seconds.

The short installation time was helped by the fact that the land was already prepared with four small foundation pads, water access, waste and electricity.

The 2.6 meter (8.53 ft) wide cube home weighs only 1.8 short tons (1.6 metric tons), due to its light-weight aluminum frame and boasts an estimated energy consumption of 4-5 kWh per day. The guest home features an adjustable double bed, living/dining space that can accommodate up to eight guests, toilet, shower, kitchenette, air conditioning and LED lighting.

Horden Cherry Lee architects came up with the original Micro Compact home prototype back in 2005, which was constructed using a wooden frame and based on traditional Japanese tea-houses. Since then the model has been modified to include a lightweight structure, optional roof photovoltaic solar panels that are combined with a small diameter vertical axis wind generator, long duration LED lighting and external walkways.

The site was prepared prior, though. That ought to count. The 'installed in 4 minutes' is just promotion and marketing. I 'install' the same kind of thing every time I pull the travel trailer into a campsite.

This modern cube sticks out like a sore thumb in a nature setting. No price tag ether.

I bet the price tag is embarassing and I'd take the travel trailer over this any day.

Delivered by helicopter? like I have one of those ready and waiting of a last minute guest? Get real. It's a portable power station with an bed and breakfast. And it took four minutes to hook up, not "Install." Installation includes all the prep work!

I'm glad this was mentioned; "The short installation time was helped by the fact that the land was already prepared with four small foundation pads, water access, waste and electricity." added to the fact it took them a lot longer to build it from scratch (at the airport?) No seriously, $50,000 would make a great RV purchase IMO.

The other commenters have missed two interesting things here. Accommodate last minute guests. Really? Oh, I forgot we all have concrete pads and utilities set up on our land just in case we have last minute guests and need to helicopter in a guest house.

Cool concept, but I'm sure the helicopter time alone was enough to buy&build a nice yurt there.

What a hideous 'house' design, quelle surprise. Why didn't they make it look like a quaint old cottage, with a thatched roof? That wouldn't destroy the countryside enough, I guess.

Let's see:
1) Pre-prepared site. $50,000.00 2) SIXTEENTH UNIT INSTALLED!!! @ $10,000.00/unit? =$160,000!!!! 3) Frellin' SWITZERLAND!!!! Not Wisconsin or New Hampshire. 4) Helicopter ride. $8,000.00 5) Able-bodied crew to "just install it" @ $100/hour = $3,000.00 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Total for 75 square foot = $320,000.00 or $426.00 per square foot.
I'll take two! Do you accept C.O.D.?
