Indoor green walls, for those who don’t know, are essentially flat vertical surfaces that are completely covered in plants. Not only do they look nice, but they also help remove toxins from the air. Now, gardening entrepreneur Mark Prescott has taken that same idea and applied it to a cat litter box deodorizer, known as the Purrfect Air Litter Box System.

The system starts with the user’s own covered cat litter box. A small external diaphragm pump draws air out of that container, via a hose that is inserted through a small hole at the back and top of the box. That smelly air proceeds to be pumped into the bottom of an adjacent pot, which is filled with soil and a live house plant.

In a process known as phytoremediation, microbes living in the soil amongst the plant’s roots remove much of the offending organic compounds from that air. Once the “processed” air rises out of the soil, it is reportedly much cleaner than it was before, and virtually odorless. The process is assisted by an attached automatic irrigation system.

Prescott is current raising production funds for the product, on Indiegogo. A pledge of US$55 will get you your own Purrfect Air Litter Box System – which consists of the pump, hoses and irrigation system – when and if they’re ready to go.

A little more information on the science behind the system is available in Mark’s pitch video.

The health effects of poor indoor air quality include, throat, nose, and eye irritations, respiratory infections, sinus problems, headaches, asthma, allergies. Years of research and testing have developed a new product to address poor indoor air quality and offense odors. Air-ReNu, produces a small electronic field, consisting primarily of electrons. These airborne electrons ionize the suspended gases and liquid cation molecules that carry the toxins and odors within the room, turning them into anions. The anions are the first steps in the antimicrobial process and the basis for which commercial Ionizers and ozone generators have been sold for years. Unlike mechanically produced air cleaners, Air-ReNu, is a natural, safe and effective, permeant solution. Air-Renu works continually, 7/24/365 eliminating odors and maintaining healthy clean indoor air.

This is a good time to mention some forty year old research pioneered by NASA for long duration space travel. NASA found that of the available common house plants the Spider plant is the easiest to maintain and most effective at cleaning air. This is partially an effect of the soil and it's microbes, and the plant itself. Both are important for removing indoor air pollutants and reducing them to harmless or useful end products.

darn price, my cat goes to outside add on for litter box & smell still creeps in, can one adapt to outside use. Love the idea
