Philips has wheeled out a new addition to its family of Hue connected light bulbs, aimed squarely at those looking to set a certain type of mood. The Philips Hue E14 candle light bulb comes in both color and white ambiance versions, and hooks up to the Hue ecosystem for compatibility with already-installed lighting systems.

The Philips Hue candle light bulb uses a smaller socket than the company's other color-changing and temperature control globes, bearing the E14 screw cap commonly used for decorative lighting. Philips says the new addition makes its Hue bulbs compatible with 80 percent of commonly-used sockets in homes around the world.

With the white ambiance version, users can insert the candle-style bulb into a chandelier for a romantic dinner, for example. Perhaps more practically, it could be screwed into a bedside lamp and programmed to gradually dim as bed time approaches, through the Philips Hue app. Then the following morning, it could gradually brighten as the sun comes up for a gentler start to the day.

The white and color ambiance candle, on the other hand, can be tuned to a either a broad spectrum of white light or one of more than 16 million colors, just like Philips' other color-changing globes.

Both versions feature a color temperature range of 2,200k to 6,500k and will be available in Europe by the end of April and then in North America later in the year. They will be priced from €34.95 (about US$38).
