Acer Aspire 5738.

Acer's latest laptop aims to offer something new to videogame and movie enthusiasts: equipped with a 3D screen and glasses, the AS5738 is specifically designed to deliver 3D multimedia and it's also capable of translating standard 2D media content into the third dimension.

The AS5738 uses TriDef 3D technology, which includes a 3D screen, software and glasses. The idea is to give users a unique media experience, not just with specifically developed media and software, but also by taking standard content such as pictures and last-generation videogames and processing them appropriately to add the illusion of depth.

The 15.6" HD display is coated with a special film that allows LCD technology to render images stereoscopically when users are wearing the included 3D polarizing glasses. The TriDef software suite includes everything from a media player for displaying pictures and video to an "ignition tool" that can convert all programs built on DirectX 9 and above without the need for a special graphics card. Of course, the AS5738 can also be used as a traditional laptop, by turning the "3D" mode off.

The AS5738 sports Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of RAM, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 graphic card with 512MB of dedicated memory and 5.1-channel Dolby Home Theater audio for an immersive media experience. Also included is a high-resolution webcam, multi-gesture touchpad with lock button to prevent accidental input, and two touch buttons for quick file backup and reducing energy consumption.

    Acer AS5738 Technical specifications:
  • Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 processor (2 MB L2 cache, 2.2GHz, 800 MHz FSB)
  • 4GB of DDR2 1066MHz RAM
  • 320GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
  • 15.6" 1366x768 resolution, LED-backlit TFT LCD display with integrated TriDef 3D screen
  • ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 with 512MB of dedicated DDR3 VRAM and up to 1792MB of shared memory
  • 8X DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive
  • Multi-gesture touchpad
  • Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
  • 6-cell Li-ion battery (4400 mAh)
  • 6.16 lbs, 15.1x9.9x1.5"
  • The Acer Aspire 5738DG 3D notebook will be available starting this week for a suggested retail price of US$800.

Below is a short demonstration of how the TriDef Ignition Tool can project a videogame into the third dimension (3D glasses are needed).

Is it a gimmick or way of the future? Let us know in the comments section.

I have glasses, 3D to computers is not new. Stunt Island, believe it or not you could make your own 3D Movies. Disney made the game. To view with out glasses, just put your index finger out in front of your nose, about a foot and draw it in slowly towards your nose till your eyes are almost cross eyed and the two pictures should become one, like looking through Binoculars. The Red & Green can give you a Headache.
Sony made basically 3 D glasses called Glasstrons, but were so real, they discontinued them. I Have a pair, and I was playing the game AGILE WARRIOR-FIIIX, Playstation one, and about 20 minutes into the game, my stomach started bothering me, believe it or not I was getting Air sick. I shut down, and it took me 3 hours to get rid of it. Haven't played the game since. They wouldn't allow anybody under 16 to use the glasses, and the glasses would shut off automatically after one hour.

Yes, agreeing with one of the other reviews, I agree that the speakers are monotone, but buying a laptop for sound quality is ill-advised. I usually use headphones while watching movies or listening to music anyways. This laptop is not for gaming purposes, so if that\'s your intent...look elsewhere. If you\'re looking for a value laptop, you cannot pass this up! A $500 laptop with an Intel I3 processor is too good to be true! This is my 3rd laptop and I now rarely ever use any of the others. Compare the processing power of the I3 processor against all of the other processors in this price range at [...] and then make your choice. Intel\'s new line of processors is without comparison. My desktop has an Intel I7 and is unsurpassed by most anything on the market. If you\'re looking for a laptop that will handle most people\'s standard operations...look no further.See Here: Acer AS5742-7120 15.6-Inch Laptop (Mesh Black)

I\'m a somewhat advanced computer user and had been looking at laptops for a while before buying the Acer AS5742Z-4685. I dug into all of the specs of about 6 different models and zeroed in on this one as the best value. The price point was above the $300 I spent on our \'family\' laptop a year ago, but I\'m glad I spent the extra $100 (check out some of the private sellers\' prices).See Here: Acer aspire Laptop
