When considering the use of Android smartphone apps on a bigger screen, many of us would probably think no larger than a tablet, or perhaps even an All-in-One. But what if you could play all your favorite games, update your social media profiles, or dive into productivity and lifestyle apps on a 46-inch multi-touch display? With the new Android version of the Platform 46 Coffee Table debuted by Ideum and 3M at the Digital Signage Expo in Las Vegas yesterday, you can do just that.
The Android version of Ideum's Platform 46 Coffee Table features the same 60-point simultaneous touch technology and integrated Core i7 computer system as its Windows-based tables announced last year. That means a 46-inch bezel-free 3M C4667PW multi-touch LCD display at 1080p resolution, with a chemically-strengthened glass surface and IP54 waterproof rating, and a small-form-factor PC that boasts a 3.7 GHz quad-core processor, 16 GB of RAM and a 500 GB hard drive hidden within a high-grade aluminum pedestal.
It runs Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) on Intel's x86 architecture for the promise of a fast and responsive mobile OS experience. All of the same apps you'll find on your smartphone or tablet can be used on the Coffee Table, but the new larger screen format opens the door to multi-user, multi-touch, big screen application development.
The Android version of the Platform 46 Coffee Table will go on sale later in the year, with prices starting at a snip under US$7,000. Ideum is planning to offer Android versions of other devices in its product line, too, and will include dual-boot Android and Windows 8 systems.
