Whether you're sitting just outside the lines of a baseball diamond on a mid-April night or camping at 10,000 feet in the dead of winter, a thin piece of canvas isn't really enough to keep you warm. And yet that's all that stands between your backside and the cold air molecules below. The Toasty Tush uses some simple design to make your camp chair a little warmer.

Even if you're sitting in front of a raging, three-foot-high fire, your back is left hanging out in the wind. The Toasty Tush is cut to fit the standard folding camp chair and provides insulation from the cold.

Unlike some other heated chairs we've seen, the Toasty Tush doesn't involve any type of heavy, expensive electric heating element. Instead, it relies on a strategy that another standard piece of outdoor kit has been using for decades - reflective heating. Integrated inside the cushion is a piece of reflective aluminum, which radiates your body heat back at you. It's like an emergency-blanket cushion for your seat.

The Toasty Tush is available in several sizes, including a smaller version designed for sporting events like hockey and football games. It also comes in a variety of patterns. Retail price is CAD$30, which is pretty close to the American price at today's rates.

I think this is good news for those who have cold bums when camping or attending outdoor concerts or any place a folding chair is used. :)

This covers radiative cooling, but does nothing for convective cooling. No reason they couldn't add a layer of insulation, like Thermolite, to the chair. As long as it's the upper fabric surface that's handling the support duty and the lower surface is free to expand, the insulation would maintain full loft and could make things much warmer. Also, close off the sides underneath the armrests.

I am a hunter. If this could be silent as well as warm, then it would appeal to me. Gadgeteer, I agree with your additions to the proposed INSERT for an existing folding chair. But while you are at it, make a longer version for chairs with foot rests. long enough and wide enough for it to wrap your legs, perhaps with Velcro closures. It is much too easy to get cold while sitting still and silent for long hours.

why not 'invent' warm pants?
i mean - if your a** is cold when you are just lounging around, it will be cold when you are out walking too...
how does a warm chair really solve anything?
doesn;t matter anyway, sounds like they haven;t really solved the 'warm chair' problem either...

Kellory we have been looking at designing a hunting mat as well as some othere styles using similar technology hopefully it will be out in the near future. As the designer of the Toasty Tush I did look at different ways to cover to the chair and found this to be the best way to make it portable while still offering enough coverage for the user. For those wanting custom sizes to fit their specific chair I'm always happy to design something for them. Thanks Gizmag.com for the article great job!

Laurie Mullin, thanks for the response. If you mean a mat to sit on while hunting, you are wasting you time. There are very few situations where you can still see what is around you, when sitting that low. That is why most deer hunters prefer to hunt from elevated stands. For use in a blind, find me a blanket that can be spread over me and my chair, has a good R factor, silent, black in color (camo serves no purpose in a blind) and WILL NOT CATCH FIRE from my propane heater sitting on the floor of the blind. THAT, I would buy.
