Having previously converted the traditional owner's manual into an iOS app in 2010 and following up in 2014 by putting it inside the vehicle's touchscreen, Hyundai has continued the evolution of the former glove box staple with the Hyundai Virtual Guide. The augmented reality (AR) app will initially be compatible with the 2015 Sonata, with additional models to follow.
When it launches later this year, the app will be able to recognize over 45 features of the Sonata and offer insights for use, maintenance and repair when relevant parts of the car are viewed through a mobile device’s camera.
The app was created with the help of a survey of Hyundai customers who noted the most difficult-to-understand parts of the printed manuals for their vehicles. These were then used as a guideline for creating the AR portions of the app as well as the informational videos and overlay images included. In all, more than 82 how-to videos, six 3D overlay images for major portions of the vehicle, and more than 50 informational guides in 2D format are available within the app.
How-to videos and information are available in virtual guides that explain how to change an air filter, what is in the fuse box, how to refill or top off fluids like oil and brake, how to operate the smart cruise control or smart trunk, how to pair a phone through the Bluetooth system, and more.
The app will be free of charge for both Apple and Android devices and is demonstrated in the video below.
