Unless you have a unique circumstance (e.g. farm, adjacent wilderness) you will probably need the trailer too. Pivotal claims a trailer to sky time of less than 30 minutes, and vice versa.

Personal flight is currently undergoing a renaissance thanks to the rapid advancement of so many requisite industrial technologies. The next phase of personal flight is poised to begin and the production version of this aircraft could well mark the occasion in history.

In 2016, when the World eVTOL Aircraft Directory first began, it listed just a handful of electrically-powered Vertical Take Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft designs. Eight years later, it lists over 1,000 eVTOL concepts.

Many of these new aircraft are planned for launch over the coming 36 months, but it looks to us like the Pivotal Helix has beaten everybody to market as the world's first commercial eVTOL because it is about to begin deliveries of its scaled production units.

The first bulk customer deliveries will occur in July, though the very first commercial sale of the Helix occurred last October (2023) and the first four of eight Helix aircraft and two flight simulators that were ordered for evaluation by the United States Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) were delivered in February 2024.

The Helix and its predecessor sibling the Blackfly were largely flight tested using autonomous capabilities, and Pivotal CEO Ken Karklin joined the company in 2022 with considerable expertise in the area.

Karklin spent 13 years at AeroVironment, one of the world’s leading manufacturers of unmanned aerial vehicles, with the last two years as CEO of the giant defense contractor.

An autonomous version of the Helix is unquestionably in Pivotal's near future and bringing onboard a CEO who spent a decade supplying the military with such well known small autonomous aircraft as the Raven, Switchblade, Wasp and Puma leaves little doubt as to the opportunities the Pivotal board sees in becoming a supplier of the military.

The Bell-Boeing V-22 Osprey is the only crewed tiltrotor that has seen production to date, and they cost around $92.6 million apiece, with cripling operating costs ... and though the initial budget to develop the V-22 in 1988 was $2.5 billion, costs blew out more than ten-fold, before all the accidents are taken into account.

The Helix has a much lower price point and operating cost compared to traditional helicopters, and at $190,000 apiece, the future looks bright indeed for Pivotal.

looks like a fun recreational toy. Would be amazing to zip through the grand canyon in one. Hope the company does well, and in the future, an average person, can rent one for 30 minutes of fun. I would think a rental company could have a some at scenic places, Hawaii, NYC, Grand Canyon, Vegas, Badlands, Redwood National Forest, Yosemite. Plus a bunch of places that are not US, I'm sure the UAE would love them.

20 miles of range? That's a joke right? That can't be real that someone would build and market an aeroplane/helicopter that only goes for 20 miles heck that's about 20 minutes of flying time at 63 mph. Get real.

BlackFly seemed like a better name. I find Helix very generic. Nomenclature aside, this has always been my favorite design. Simplicity exemplified, no moving parts.

I cannot WAIT until these things (Jetson 1, etc) get a flight time of an hour with a 20 minute emergency reserve. I would so buy one today. But until batteries get double the energy density I don't think we will see them...

@vince and anyone disappointed about eVTOL range: batteries aren't fit for long flights. Less than 30 min reserve fuel makes me nervous. Thus, eVTOLs remain a niche luxury. The FAA's safety standards exist for a reason. Batteries provide about 250 Wh/kg, with hopes to double this in 15 years. SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) offers 12,000 Wh/kg. The high energy demand of flying means car-like electrification struggles against gravity.

A quarter-million dollars for a Part 103 ultralight? With max 20-minute flight duration? Sheesh. Obviously not intended for anyone who tries to get value for money. With an eight-hour recharge time (other articles say level 2 charging cuts that to 2-3 hours, but where are you going to find a level 2 charger?), you won’t have to worry about overloading your logbook with lots of hours flown…

Lordy. The usual nay-saying, backward-thinking Luddites crawl out of the woodwork for their tiresome comment opportunity!

And Dan: whilst SAF may hold 12kWh/g of energy, you'll only see about a third of that (at best) in terms of thrust due to the inefficiencies of the typical aircraft drivetrain. By contrast, electric drivetrains are much more efficient, perhaps 80%+ (including charging losses). So, not as far to go as one might imagine to be really useful. For larger aircraft, in the US, 50% of all commercial flights are under 500 miles. There is obviously a long way to go before we will see any sort of e-plane achieve that range (although Eviation's 'Alice' promises nearly half that) but *every* new technology starts off with seemingly ridiculous restrictions (just think of the first mobile phones in 1985... and look how far the technology advanced in just 15 years) - the key is to understand what the market may be after 2-5 years of development later. That requires vision, guts, powers of persuasion (to win around the Luddites) and... *money*!
