A dedicated band of Minecraft and Game of Thrones enthusiasts has lovingly recreated the fictional King's Landing locale in incredible detail. The setting will be familiar to fans of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy novels and its TV adaptation, Game of Thrones, as the capital of the Seven Kingdoms.
In a Reddit post, user pizzainacup explains that the map was created using WorldPainter, a map editing program that lets users edit Minecraft worlds using an interface akin basic image editing software. Even so, pizzainacup reveals that it took 100 builders over four months to build the King's Landing map, which includes some 3,000 buildings which have all been decorated on the inside.
Despite considerable pressure from the Reddit community, pizzainacup is resisting calls to share the map, which is almost 35 GB in size. For now, the builders await an update to the modding API, that will allow them to realize their vision of an open ended RPG complete with quests and computer-controlled characters set on Game of Thrones' continents Westeros and Essos. It's dizzying to think that King's Landing will be just one of many locations built for the game.
Those itching to experience the Minecraftian King's Landing can do so at the website of the team's dedicated Minecraft server, WesterosCraft. A custom texture pack is required.
