At a Computex press event today, the company's chairman Jonney Shih introduced a host of new laptops, including a couple flying world's thinnest claims. The new ZenBook 3 Deluxe takes the thinnest 14-inch laptop crown, but it's the ZenBook Flip S convertible that really caught our attention.
After taking a look at the 2-in-1 convertible market earlier this month, Asus says that the Flip S is the slimmest critter around – at just 10.9 mm (0.4 in) thin. The 13.3-inch Windows 10 laptop is also a featherweight, tipping the scales at 1.1 kg (2.4 lb). Its 360° ErgoLift hinge allows the (up to) 4K resolution multitouch display to be flipped over for tablet mode, and is reported to lift and tilt the keyboard for more comfortable typing when the screen is flipped more than 135 degrees.
Processing grunt up to 2.6 GHz Core i7 is on tap, with integrated HD graphics, and a roomy 1 TB SSD and up to 16 GB of LPDDR3 system memory providing support. There's a teeny side-mounted fingerprint sensor for security, two USB 3 and one USB-C ports, 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1, and a new cooling system includes a 0.3 mm liquid-crystal-polymer fan impeller to help prevent the mobile computer from running hot. Its 39 Wh battery is reported good for up 11.5 hours between charges. The slim 2-in-1 will have a starting price tag of US$1,099.
Other laptop additions announced today include the ZenBook Pro and the VivoBook Pro 15. The 15.6-inch ZenBook Pro is pitched as the thinnest, lightest and most powerful ZenBook so far and boasts specs including an Intel Core i7-7700HQ quad-core processor, Nvidia GeForce GTX1050 Ti graphics, 1 TB of SSD storage and 16 GB of DDR4 RAM. The 18.9 mm (0.7 in) thick, 1.8 kg (3.9 lb) mobile workstation also has four Harmon Kardon speakers to complement its 4K display, and will stay alive for a healthy 14 hours of use before needing a top up. Prices start at $1,299.
The VivoBook Pro 15 is also a 15.6-inch Windows 10 laptop, powered by the same processor, and including the same 16 GB of DDR4 system memory. But this baby has hybrid storage comprising a 2 TB hard drive and 512 GB SSD. It rocks a 4K display, stereo Harmon Kardon speakers and a dual-fan cooling system with copper module and pipes. This one will start at $799.
The remaining laptop reveals were the ZenBook 3 Deluxe and the VivoBook S15. Asus has managed to cram a 14-inch thin bezel display into a 13-inch chassis for the 3 Deluxe, which is said to be the world's thinnest 14-inch laptop at 12.1 mm (0.47 in) thick. The 1.1 kg laptop has a Core i7-7500U heart, supported by up to 16 GB of LPDDR3 RAM and 1 TB of SSD storage. It's capable of supporting two external UHD displays and rocks two USB C ports. Pricing starts at $1,199.
The VivoBook S15 meanwhile features a 15.6-inch slim-bezel display, is powered by a 7th Generation Intel Core i7-7500U processor and GeForce 940MX GPU, and up to 16 GB of DDR4 RAM. The cheapest of the bunch, this model will start at $499.
Asus revealed a new router design, too, which looks like it could have come straight out of Dyson's research lab. The eye-catching hole in its middle of the Blue Cave box is illuminated by blue light, it runs on the latest Intel Wi-Fi chipset and has its antennas hidden away inside for a spike-free aesthetic. The 802.11ac dual-band router should be fast enough to deliver smooth 4K video streams, fast downloads and latency-free gaming, and comes with cooked-in commercial-grade security courtesy of Trend Micro.
