The newly-announced Fosen Vind project will comprise six wind farms with a combined capacity of 1,000 MW, more than the current total installed capacity in Norway and on track to become the largest of its type in Europe.
The Fosen Vind project's combined capacity will also make it the fourth largest in the world. The Gansu Wind Farm in China, currently under construction, is listed as the largest with an eventual expected capacity of 6,000 MW.
Fosen Vind is a joint venture between Statkraft, TrønderEnergi and Nordic Wind Power. Its €1.1 billion (US$1.2 billion) portfolio will include the Harbaksfjellet, Roan, Storheia, Kvenndalsfjellet, Geitfjellet and Hitra 2 wind farms.
The wind farms are to be located on the Fosen peninsula, the island of Hitra and in Snillfjord, which between them are said to offer some of the best conditions for generating wind-power in Europe. It is expected that the project will generate 3.4 TWh of electricity annually.
Construction of the wind farms is due to begin in the second quarter of this year and is slated for completion in 2020.
