Hoverboard

For decades now we've been teased with hoverboard concepts, but now aerospace company Arca is taking orders for what it claims is the real deal. The ArcaBoard appears to be the closest thing to the technology from Back to the Future: Part II that we've seen so far.

We may still be waiting for the first true hoverboards, but one firm says its single-wheeler feels so like hovering that it's actually called the Hoverboard. The board is mounted atop a 10-in wheel, with users leaning forward to accelerate and backwards to decelerate or change direction.

For years, designers and startups have been attempting to mimic fiction and create a hoverboard like the one famously piloted by Marty McFly in Back to the Future II. We never expected a luxury automaker to throw its hat into the hoverboard ring, but today, that's exactly what Lexus did.

A future in which we're all flying around on hoverboards may not have materialized just yet, but it does appear to be getting closer. After Hendo's magnetic hoverboard was announced last year, a new world record for the farthest hoverboard flight has now been set. And there wasn't a magnet in sight.

Despite many efforts to make the hoverboard a reality in the more than two decades since Marty McFly zipped around in Back to the Future Part II, we're still waiting. Does the new Hendo Board signal that the wait may finally be over?
