About this time last year, Microsoft unveiled the "largest update to the Surface portfolio in its history" in preparation for a new version of Windows. This time around, the company has refreshed three members of the family.

Microsoft has announced a slimmer version of Windows and a low-cost laptop to run it on. The Surface Laptop SE has been designed exclusively for use in the classroom, and is the first of a number of Chromebook rivals powered by Intel and AMD.

The latest flavor of Microsoft's operating platform – Windows 11 – is due to land next month, and the computing giant has revealed what it's calling the "largest update to the Surface portfolio in its history."

A few years ago, Microsoft revealed the Surface Hub, an interactive electronic whiteboard with video conferencing capabilities targeted at businesses. The expensive device didn't exactly take off, but the company is hoping to find greater success with the second-generation model – the Surface Hub 2.

Launched two years ago, Microsoft's Surface Book is a solid laptop/tablet hybrid. Now the company is launching the Surface Book 2, packing up to five times more power than the original, an extended battery life, a bigger screen and Windows Mixed Reality support.
