The fountain dubbed "The Waters of Olympic Park" sits at the base of the giant cauldron at Sochi and was created by award-winning California designer firm WET. Featuring choreographed fog and colored lights, the fountain sweeps, jumps and dances to the strains of Tchaikovsky and Michael Jackson.

At a cost of around US$ 50 billion, the 2014 Winter Olympics are said to be the most expensive Games to date. But rather than go for trophy buildings by global "starchitects" the Russians have built stadia primed for legacy use, with some designed to be taken down and moved elsewhere.
