There was a time not so long ago that attending a college lecture required nothing more than a notepad and a pen. The laptops, mobile devices and takeaway coffees that students take to class today, though, take up a little more space than lecture chair arms can typically accommodate. Desk Buddy provides a little more real estate to work on.

The simple device was conceived by Desk Buddy's CEO and founder Andrew Shao during his senior year of college. Shao says he sat a statistics exam that he wasn't able to finish, in part as a result of the clutter he had with him that he kept having to rearrange.

Shao's Desk Buddy, therefore, is aimed at making life more comfortable for college students, who he says spend an average of 15 hours per week in lectures. It is made of recycled plastic and provides an additional 8 x 9.7 in (20 x 25 cm) surface on which to work.

The Desk Buddy is attached to the fold-out arm of a lecture room chair using a clamp. This simply slots onto the existing desk arm and is then tightened. It's a quick and simple means of providing more workspace and will work with left- or right-mounted arms. Once the lecture is over, the user can slip the Desk Buddy into a bag with their books.

An Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign for the Desk Buddy is underway. Pledges from US$15 will be rewarded with one of the units, assuming all goes to plan with the campaign. Shipping is expected from May.
