With a Google Home speaker, users can throw out voice commands to ask questions of the all-knowing search engine, or direct music and video to connected devices around the house. Now, Sony has announced that some of its speakers and TVs will be able to join that network, allowing them to play media and be controlled via speech.

Through firmware updates, Google Assistant functionality can be applied to new and existing Sony devices, including all Android-powered TVs, and several models of Sony speakers, sound bars and receivers with built-in Chromecasts.

These devices can then be used like any other Google Home-compatible device. Voice commands like "Ok Google, play the party playlist on my Sony speaker" or "Play YouTube on the TV" will do just that, while other things like adjusting the volume, changing tracks and pausing can also be done by politely asking.

In addition, Sony's devices can become part of Google Home's Multi-Room Groups, allowing any combination of Google, Sony or other compatible devices to play media in sync, around the house.

"Now you can get the awesome sound and video quality of Sony products working together with Google Home," says Mike Fasulo, President and COO of Sony Electronics. "This functionality is available today for the Chromecast built-in Sony speakers and Android TV Sony 4K HDR televisions consumers already have at home, or plan to purchase for the holidays."

Compatible devices include the HT-ST9, HT-NT5, HT-CT790, HT-XT2, HT-RT5 models of sound bars, the STR-DN1070, STR-DN1060, and STR-DN860 model receivers, and wireless speaker models SRS-X99, SRS-ZR7, SRS-ZR5, and SRS-HG1.
