With video rental stores going the way of the dodo, it’s fast becoming the norm to download movies and TV shows from online services such as Netflix and Hulu. But what if you want to take a downloaded movie with you somewhere? You could pack up your big ol’ DVR, or you could use HP’s portable new Pocket Playlist drive that can stream media over Wi-Fi.
The "smaller than a smartphone"-sized device comes with a one-month subscription to PlayLater, which is an app that allows users to download DVR content from over 50 online providers. The drive is capable of storing as many as 16 full-length movies, 7,600 songs or 10,000 photos.
After downloading, content can be saved until the user feels like watching it. Then, it can be streamed via Wi-Fi to up to five mobile devices at once. According to HP, it works with most Wi-Fi-enabled Android, Windows and iOS devices.
The Pocket Playlist Wi-Fi Media streaming drive starts shipping as of February 15th, and is priced at US$129.
