Friday September 19, 2003Lockheed Martin has conducted a successful test of the Line-of-Sight Antitank (LOSAT) Weapon System against a moving target at short range. Designed to provide extremely lethal and accurate missile fire effective against heavy armour systems and with a range exceeding tanks' main guns, vision of the recent LOSAT test clearly indicates the devastating capabilities of the system.LOSAT consists of kinetic energy missiles (KEMs) and a second-generation FLIR/video acquisition sensor mounted on a highly mobile chassis. Earlier tests have demonstrated the system against a reinforced concrete structure but the recent tests marked the first guided test against a moving target and the first test in a series of 18 Production Qualification Tests (PQT) that are under the control of the US Army Test and Evaluation community.The LOSAT weapon system can be transported and deployed from the air and the lethality of the KEM defeats all predicted future armoured combat vehicles according to Lockheed Martin. The system also provides dramatically increased rates of fire, enhanced performance under adverse weather and obscured battlefield conditions and a better chance of survival for the operator.The series of PQTs at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico are expected to be complete by the end of the second quarter 2004.
