Mercedes SLS AMG, we hardly knew ye. The beautiful supercar that Mercedes launched but a few years ago is navigating its way toward its production conclusion. Mercedes is marking the end with a special edition known fittingly as the SLS AMG GT Final Edition. Customers have but 350 opportunities to secure one of the final SLS AMG models.

Mercedes introduced the SLS AMG in 2009. The first car ever built entirely by the AMG performance division, the SLS was a sort of successor to the Mercedes SLR McLaren and a re-imagined gull wing inspired by the 300SL of the 50s and 60s. Its original 571-hp 6.3-liter V8 configuration gave way to the 591-hp GT version, which replaced the standard SLS AMG for the 2013 model year. It also served as the basis for several derivatives, including the SLS AMG Electric Drive, the hard-hitting, track-inspired SLS AMG Black Series and a GT3 race car.

The last member of the SLS AMG family tree is the GT Final Edition, which made its world debut at both the Los Angeles and Tokyo auto shows earlier this week. Mercedes says that the car "represents the last opportunity for customers to order an SLS AMG – while at the same time reflecting the unrivaled success story and unique scope offered by the first vehicle to be completely built by Mercedes-AMG."

The special edition doesn't get any added power, using the same 591-hp 6.3 V8 engine that's been the GT's standard package since it was introduced. Instead, the Final Edition makes its name in the form of unique, multi-tone styling that packs some contrast carbon fiber on the hood, front splitter and rear spoiler. Inspired by the air outlet on the SLS AMG Black Series and GT3 cars, the outlet sliced into the Final Edition's hood both sheds engine heat and adds downforce at the front axle.

The Final Edition rolls on forged light-alloy wheels that come dressed in matte black with high-sheen highlights. The wheels can be shod in Dunlop Sport Maxx Race Cup tires, should the buyer check that particular no-cost option box. Developed exclusively for Mercedes AMG, the tires add grip and steering precision. A set of red braking calipers adds a little extra below-body flair.

The interior look is defined by diamond-stitched designo Exclusive leather on the seats and doors. Silver top stitching and glossy carbon trim offset the black leather. An AMG Alcantara performance steering wheel, Final Edition center console badge, 3D Alcantara seam on the dashboard, and embossed AMG emblems on the head rests finish the special interior off. A Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG surround sound system is available as an option.

Mercedes will build 350 Final Edition models, with deliveries set to begin next March. The package will be available as either a Coupé or a Roadster. In Germany, the Coupé will retail for €225,505, and the Roadster will price in at €233,835. Mercedes has not yet announced pricing for the US or other markets.
