It may not go down as one of the best Red Bull stunts ever, but in what definitely qualifies as an interesting use of a Red Bull F1 car, Toro Rosso driver Max Verstappen gained and dropped vert on the world-famous slopes of Kitzbühel, Austria. The stunt served as an appetizer of on-snow speed ahead of the Hahnenkamm-Rennen ski races. The 800-hp RWD Red Bull RB7 would never be our first choice for navigating pure snow, but it sure looks cool doing it.

As is often the case when it comes to Red Bull-backed stunts, there doesn't appear to be any answer to the question "why?" beyond "why not" and "let's make it viral." The 3,500 or so spectators certainly weren't complaining about watching what Red Bull calls the first-ever F1 show run on an Alpine peak.

Before Verstappen took the wheel, the Red Bull Racing team did some serious wrenching on the 2011 RB7. Prior to being helicoptered into Kitzbuhel, the car was used for a string of hot weather events, including battling 95º F (35º C) heat in Australia, so the main task was preparing it for the cold. The team remapped the engine for improved throttle control and added a set of specially built snow chains to give it a fighting chance in the slick, shifty snow.

Taking an open, ultralight race car up and down a snow-covered slope may not be the most advisable way to get your kicks, but the video and full photo gallery prove it's possible.

This is dumb. He can't even crack the throttle without breaking the tires loose. No speed means no down force and no traction. Isn't there a frozen lake somewhere where they could drive on? That would be so much cooler.

I would love to see the 'spec' of those snow chains...
The average set is limited to 50mph and I can't imagine them being strapped to a car with 1000hp. Lucky they didn't shred and throw shrapnel everywhere!

Yeah! Donuts, going fast and furious on a frozen lake would have been awesome.
I also wish the video had shown the view from a spectator and not just behind the driver's shoulder. Maybe they considered it, but it looked too slow to have any visual impact (for the Red Bull bunch).

Okay it's Red bull I get it, too bad didn't see much of the rear tires wiping those chains around...must be some tough links.
But me and my youngest son tearing down our street in -28C with wind chill with a all wheel studded go-cart is just about as silly but fun....now he's looking to replace his drive chain snapped...

Interesting, but I would have preferred to listen to the music that engine was making rather than the crappy, intrusive soundtrack on that video.

Stupidest thing I ever saw. Formula 1 on Snow!. What is the point? I guess it's for the more money than sense Ski Fashion victims types. Must really spoil the peace and view and cause Polution in this once wonderful wilderness we use to have... We are all going to die because of Global warming and you can see who is responsible: Daft rich spoilt brats.

Oh great, yet another "motor sport" to further tear up nature and produce even more greenhouse gases. Brilliant. All the dirtbikes, snowmobiles and jet skis should be put in a big iron box and buried in the desert.
