The Samsung Galaxy Nexus will be the first Google Phone pre-loaded with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

The first Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone will soon be available in its country of origin on Wednesday. OK, technically the Samsung Galaxy Nexus is made in Asia, but the latest Google phone carrying the anticipated Android upgrade traces its software roots to California. Fans there and in the rest of the United States have eagerly been awaiting its arrival while watching the device's global rollout pass them by.

The Galaxy Nexus first landed weeks ago in Europe, where there were widespread reports of problems with volume control and other bugs. In the interim, Canada and other countries received the phone while the U.S. continued to wait. The Galaxy Nexus dropped in Australia on Tuesday, and the American release was announced shortly thereafter.

Verizon Wireless - the CDMA carrier with a deal to offer the Galaxy Nexus exclusively in the U.S., at least for a little while - says the Google Phone will be available online and in Verizon stores starting Wednesday.

Some shoppers were able to get a hold of the phones in the U.S. at Best Buy stores early, after the stores apparently stocked them ahead of time by mistake. This would seem to indicate that retail locations already have the phones on hand and are likely to start selling them as well.

In addition to carrying some clout as the first official Ice Cream Sandwich phone, the Galaxy Nexus is also among the few Android phones carrying an NFC chip, which can communicate with PayPass and other payment stations that use Near Field Communication.

Check out Gizmag's earlier coverage for more specs and what to expect from the Galaxy Nexus. The Verizon CDMA version of the phone is expected to sell for $299 with a two-year contract, although discounts are already popping up online that could cut that figure by as much as half. Pricing in Australia is a bit more complicated, but you can find a good breakdown here.

I have an Android and it\'s a nice phone. Though I hate these weird update names. I mean, \"Ice Cream Sandwich\"???

This technology, among other things, turns your cell phone into a magic wand you can wave near a terminal to pay for a purchase instead of using your bank (interact) card. I find the idea exciting but remain convinced that these "software engineers" are just trying to piss me off. Android 4.0 is called Ice Cream Sandwich - WTF!!! I guess we can expect that Android 4.0.1 will be called Ice Cream Sandwich with Sprinkles. Actually an update called Android 4.0.2 has already been released (no mention of Sprinkles) Let's see: Android beta was called Android beta then the Software developers kit (SDK) was released and referred to as Astro & Bender (I think) and finally, the first commercial Android device (HTC Dream) was released with version 1.0 followed by version 1.1. So far so good. But then began this dynasty of pastries. First it was Cupcake then Donut then Eclair then Froyo (what the hell is a Froyo) then Gingerbread then Honeycomb now it's Ice Cream Sandwich. it's enough. I think they threw in Froyo just to mess with us.
What's wrong with a simple number progression??? At least Microsoft has retained some measure of class. They call their cell phone operating system Windows Phone 7. oh wait, I've just been told the update (Windows Phone 7.5) now goes by the name Mango. Safe to say future Microsoft updates will all have fruit names. If you're under thirty this might make sense to you, but for many of us over sixty... it's just "To Cool for School." If I have any of this wrong, please make allowances.......I'm over sixty God, I just realized how much I sound like Andy Rooney......and that can't be a good thing. Just in case you aren't aware.....my tongue is planted firmly in my cheek.

Voice from the future(not really) It's 5/2/2013. All the new phones sport quad and 8-core processors, 5inch-plus screens and 2GB of RAM. My Nexus is still doing OK unlocked, rooted, w/custom ROM over Android 4.2.2 and overclocked to 1.4Ghz. Not the fastest, but running the latest LOL
