Samsung today announced a new mirrorless camera that was designed by professionals for professionals. The NX1 features the latest DRIM image engine, a brand new 28 megapixel BSI sensor, super quick autofocus and a high ISO sensitivity range. The new pro level camera is also capable of 4K video recording and can send UHD footage to a high resolution TV wirelessly.
The new DRIMe V image processor is reported 2.8 times faster than the previous version, offering 15 frames per second continuous AF shooting from its hybrid Auto Focus System III with 205 phase detection points for superior tracking and a blisteringly fast autofocus speed of 0.055 sec. The newly-designed 28.2 APS-C size BSI CMOS sensor, adaptive noise reduction technology and a standard ISO sensitivity range of between 100 and 25600, which can extend to 51200, should help images stay sharp and clear, even in low light shooting situations.
Users can frame shots using the 2.36 million dot OLED electronic viewfinder, which boasts a lag of just 0.005 seconds for near real-time framing, or the 3-inch, 1,036-dot super AMOLED tilting touch display. Samsung has included its Auto Shot feature, which is claimed to accurately predict the correct time to capture an image using advanced hardware algorithms to register high speed motion and counter the effects of shutter lag in real time, which should be great for action shots.
The NX1 is capable of recording video at a resolution of 4,096 x 2,160 at 24 frames per second or 3,840 x 2,160 at 30 frames per second, and supports Phase AF for extra stability and tracking autofocus during movie recording. It makes use of the HEVC codec (H.265) to allow users to store high resolution footage on an SD card, meaning videographers can leave external 4K recorders at home. And there's something called TV Link for wireless transmission of high resolution video over 802.11ac Wi-Fi to a UHD television.
Elsewhere, the new camera benefits from durable magnesium alloy housing with dust- and splash-resistant sealing, Bluetooth 3.0, NFC and USB 3.0 connectivity, a built-in flash and a top display window to check settings and parameters.
Samsung also introduced a new dust- and splash-resistant 50 - 150 mm F2.8 NX mount high end, premium telephoto lens at Photokina today, with a custom focus range limiter and multi-axis optical image stabilization.
Samsung's PR reps have given the NX1 an estimated body-only price of US$1,499, with the new lens costing an estimated $1,599.
