Butane

​ESA’s next technology-testing CubeSat will be fitted with two tiny butane-powered thrusters, making it the agency’s first miniature satellite with the capacity to move through space under its own power.

Lilliputian Systems, an MIT spinoff, has launched a USB battery charger powered by a miniaturized butane fuel cell, which will be able recharge most mobile phones about ten times, or a laptop battery once, from one container of butane.

An about-to-be-released portable fuel cell can reportedly charge electronic devices via butane cartridges, for up to several weeks per cartridge.

Butane gas is most commonly known as the fuel that comes in home-use canisters that power camping and caravan stoves but that could be about to change. Honda begins sales in Japan next month of the Pianta (that's Italian for 'plant') FV200, a mini-tiller that runs on butane gas canisters.
