Scientists have now re-discovered a species that has long been missing. The silver-backed chevrotain, a tiny deer-like creature that hasn’t been seen in the wild in almost 30 years, has been captured alive and well on camera traps in Vietnam.

Researchers have found evidence that Schomburgk’s deer – thought extinct since 1938 – may have lived until at least the 1990s, and possibly still today.

Researchers say they have discovered the secrets behind remarkably tough deer antlers, attributing the robustness to a staggered arrangement of nanoscale fibers, something that could lead to similarly "unbreakable" materials down the track. ​

A new project has turned NASA satellites to the task of analyzing deer populations. Making use of the Terra and Aqua probes, the project studied the animals' environment to accurately predict their fawning season.​

The DeerDeter is a device that detects oncoming vehicles, then sets off an alarm to keep deer off the road.

The WWF has released a report which details more than 350 new species scientists have discovered in the eastern Himalayas over the past decade, including the world's smallest deer.
