Hurricane Sandy

Lots of houses nowadays are designed to minimize the amount of energy they use and to generate their own electricity. Fewer, though, are designed to withstand extreme coastal weather conditions as well. The high-tech and feature-loaded Sure House does all of this.

The Swedish firm White Arkitekter are the winners, with ARUP and Gensler, of an international competition to redevelop the area of Queens, New York, which was badly hit by Hurricane Sandy in 2012. The new master plan addresses extreme weather, sustainability and social integration.
