Toshiba’s new Encore 2 Write tablets are designed to provide high-precision, digitizer pen input without breaking the bank. There are two sizes of the Windows-based device available, which offer mid to low-range specs across the board.

The Encore 2 comes in 8 and 10.1-inch variants, both offering 1,280 x 800 resolution for 188 and 149 pixels per inch (PPI) respectively. They run on Windows 8.1, will last 11 hours on a charge, and are powered by Intel Atom processors with 2 GB RAM and 64 GB internal storage.

The standout feature is of course the TruPen input, which uses Wacom’s Active Electrostatics pen technology to provide 2,048 levels of pressure sensitivity. The company has included its own TruNote app, designed to let users take notes, draw or paint – providing a purpose-built interface to easily switch pen color and type. There’s also a TruCapture app for importing snaps of notes to TruNote using the rear 8 MP camera.

One other interesting feature comes in the form of the TruRecorder app – a recording tool capable of differentiating the voices of individual speakers, allowing the user to play back a single voice from a conversation, assigning icons to each speakers.

In terms of connectivity, the Write tablets offer a microUSB port alongside a microSD card reader, which supports cards up to 128 GB. The larger of the two devices also offers a Micro HDMI, allowing it to be hooked up to a bigger screen.

Both sizes of the Encore 2 Write tablet are available for purchase now, priced at US$350 for the 8-inch slate and $400 for the 10.1-inch variant.
