Two years ago, Porsche first revealed its Macan line of compacts SUVs to the world. Now, at the Tokyo Motor Show, the automaker has unveiled the latest member of that family – the 2017 Macan GTS. Among other things, it offers more power than its predecessors, along with a reengineered suspension, unique exterior/interior appointments, and new connectivity options.

Using the same 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine as the Macan S – but with some different hardware and a unique engine calibration – the GTS develops 360 hp at 6,000 rpm and 369 lb ft of torque between 1,650 and 4,000 rpm.

The rest of its powertrain is the same as that of the Macan Turbo, featuring Porsche's seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission combined with the automaker's Traction Management system (PTM) that actuates an electro-hydraulic, multi-plate clutch to variably engage the front axle depending on traction needs.

It all boils down to a 0-60 mph (97 km/h) acceleration time of 4.8 seconds (if the optional Sport Chrono Pacakge is selected), and a top end of 159 mph (256 km/h).

These not only deliver braking force, but can also assist with torque vectoring if the optional Torque Vectoring System is chosen. Its ride height and damper stiffness can also be adjusted for different driving conditions, using the Porsche Active Suspension Management.

The Macan GTS is distinguished by numerous black accents on its exterior, while its cabin features leather seats with Alcantara seat centers. Its standard PCM (Porsche Communication Management system) includes Sound Package Plus, eight speakers, a USB and aux-in interface, SiriusXM and HD radio, and Bluetooth capability. An optional PCM with Navigation module includes a hard-drive based navigation system that supports 3D navigation display, satellite image overlays, and dynamic route calculation.

When it comes to connectivity, there are two choices. Buyers with the standard PCM get Porsche Connect, which features Apple CarPlay integration. Those who shelled out for PCM with Navigation, however, can opt for Porsche Connect Plus. This system creates its own Wi-Fi hotspot via an LTE modem, so passengers can access the internet while the driver can utilize real-time driving aids such as traffic reports.
