After decades of remaining virtually unchanged, luggage design is seeing some innovation, from the Fugu Luggage which expands like an accordion, to the Bluesmart connected luggage which can be controlled via a smartphone app. Joining the baggage claim carousel is Trunkster, which adds several innovations to the standard design.
Trunkster is a range of luggage designed to offer travelers the "most streamlined travel experience." In order to achieve this lofty ambition, the designers have swapped zippers for a rolltop door, and added some high-tech solutions to the problems faced by many modern travelers.
The durable, waterproof rolltop door allows for zipperless access to all your belongings. A removable 15,000 mAh battery plus USB port means you can charge your phone several times on any journey, while a built-in digital scale lets you weigh your luggage simply by lifting it. And for US$40 extra, you can also add a GPS tracking device to ensure your luggage never gets lost in transit.
Trunkster is constructed from airplane-grade aluminum and virgin polycarbonate, and has a TSA-approved combination lock. Even standard features seen on most luggage gets some attention, with the Trunkster featuring omni-directional wheels that should "glide smoothly and silently over any surface," and a side-to-side handle designed to give you "absolute control and enhanced balance through many grip positions."
The development of Trunkster is currently being funded through a Kickstarter campaign that has already surpassed its US$50,000 goal. The popularity of the Trunkster Kickstarter means a pledge of US$295 is needed to secure either the Carry-On Trunkster (22 x 14 x 9 in / 56 x 36 x 23 cm) or the Checked Trunkster (27 x 19 x 11 in / 69 x 48 x 28 cm), assuming the creators follow through on their promises to deliver the finished product in August 2015. The estimated retail prices are a rather ambitious US$500 and $600, respectively.
