In order to stay compact and lightweight, most folding bikes have just a single chainring, limiting their hillclimbing capabilities. The Easy Ride is made to address that issue, by incorporating two shiftable gears into a custom single-ring crankset.

Many ebikes sport a derailleur to giver riders more flexibility than single-speeders. There are exceptions that combine gears with the motor, such as Pinion and Valeo. And now there's another, as Scotland's Intradrive system goes into pilot production.
