Vivo introduced a novel concept smartphone earlier this week. Not only does the Apex almost get rid of bezels from the front, but sounds belt out from the screen itself, half the display is a fingerprint scanner and the front camera pops up from inside the body when needed, and disappears when not.

We've seen another announcement-packed Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona this week, with new phones launched by Samsung, Sony, LG, Nokia, Asus, and others. So what can this glut of new devices tell us about where smartphones are heading in 2018, and what we'll see for the rest of the year?

The phone launches continue to come thick and fast at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and Asus is the latest company to show off its wares. It's unveiled three new ZenFone models for 2018, one of which bears more than a slight resemblance to a flagship smartphone recently launched by Apple.

As expected, LG has injected more smarts into its flagship smartphone. Users of the new V30S ThinQ and the V30S+ ThinQ phones will get an AI assist when using some of the commonly-used features of the camera, as well as be able to do more using voice commands.​

We've already seen phones from Samsung and Nokia launched at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and now Sony is joining the party. Its revamped, redesigned Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 Compact are the company's latest attempts to keep up with the major players in the smartphones world.
