The start/stop nature of trash collection makes electric powertrains a good choice for refuse trucks, and Phoenix-based Republic Services has just ordered 2,500 battery-electric waste trucks from Nikola.

Nikola Motors has made some big promises for its highly ambitious Badger pickup truck, including a Cybertruck-beating 600-mile range, 2.9-second 0-60 mph sprint time and 980 lb-ft of torque. Plus, they're getting a guy called Heavy D to test it.

​The Nikola Motor Company has previously brought us battery-electric cargo trucks and off-road vehicles. This month, the Arizona-based startup announced that another e-vehicle will be joining its lineup – the WAV personal watercraft.

Nikola Motor has so far been concentrating its pre-production efforts on hydrogen fuel cell trucking. But a tweet on Friday confirmed that the company is heading into shorter haul electric cargo transport territory with the announcement of battery electric versions of the Nikola Two and Tre.​

Some see the future of big rig road haulage as all-electric, while others are banking on hydrogen-electric hybrids. Nikola Motors is in the latter camp, already having two truck designs en route to production. Now there's a third, with the Tre being developed specifically for European roads.​

When Nikola Motors started advertising outrageous specs like 520 hp for its Zero all-electric side-by-side, we figured there was no way those specs would survive the journey to market. However, not only have those specs survived as Nikola prepares for production, some have actually grown.
