Tokyo Motor Show 2017

Honda takes the autonomous cargo hauler idea a step further with the RoboCas concept. This lovable robot companion carries your cargo (or you) around tight city spaces and even transforms into a pop-up lemonade stand or cafe when you arrive. ​​

The 2017 Tokyo Motor Show kicked off this week and flooded the scene with new concept cars. All types of passenger and commercial concept vehicles are on display, ranging from SUV utility vans, to futuristic cargo delivery pods, to AI-driven motorcycles, to sleek sports cars.

Subaru's been building its Viziv concept family for years, adding everything from virtual track cars to 7-seat SUVs. Prior to the Viziv Performance Concept, however, the family lacked a sedan. Subaru makes up for lost time, showing a hard-bodied four-door molded around boxer-inspired performance.

The new Goldwing may have been the Honda’s showstopper at its home motor show, but that wasn’t all. The anticipated naked Fireblade was teased once again ahead of its scheduled Milan debut, this time with an actual concept model, next to new electric and hybrid scooters, new Cub models and a Monkey.

Mitsubishi Electric has begun mass-producing the first crankshaft-mounted integrated starter-generator system for 48V hybrid systems. This system will be used by Mercedes-Benz and is on display at Tokyo Motor Show 2017.

The latest member to join Kawasaki's Z gang comes in stark contrast with the family's futuristic and aggressive streetfighter looks. Acting as a tribute to the 1972 Z1 patriarch, it is a meticulously styled modern classic variant of the current Z900 with some targeted mechanical modifications.

If a Mercedes pickup seems too docile for grunt work, just look at the Yamaha Cross Hub. This truck would likely get you ridiculed straight off any job site, but it's more of a recreational machine meant to get you, three friends and two (Yamaha) motorcycles from the city to the mountains.

Honda is showing concept vehicles in Tokyo that are based on the same electric vehicle technology platform. The Honda Sports EV Concept features a throwback look, and the Urban EV Concept features the future of what Honda will aim for in EV design. The latter will become a production model.

After five generations and 43 years in production, Honda has rolled out the sixth evolution of its flagship tourer, the GL 1800 Goldwing. Based on a redesigned six-cylinder boxer, the new model sheds a lot of weight, shrinks in dimensions and introduces a new double-wishbone front suspension.

Daimler Trucks and its subsidiary, Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus, has launched the E-Fuso Vision One electric heavy-duty truck. The companies also announced that the entire range of trucks and buses in the Mitsubishi line will be electrified in the next few years.

Mazda unveiled a four-door hatchback concept in Tokyo and it’s what the next-generation Mazda3 needs to look like. The Kai Concept is a saloonish design with smooth, buttery lines as a new generation of Mazda’s KODO design language.

Earlier this year, Mitsubishi broke some hearts when it turned the Eclipse into a small SUV. Now it's committing sacrilege once again, turning the "Evolution" of Lancer Evolution fame into another SUV. The e-Evolution concept does have some hint of sportiness, along with a lively electric 4WD ride.
