There was a time when budget actioncams (or helmetcams, or whatever you want to call them) were limited to just one or two models. Now the options abound, with manufacturers adding special features to set their cameras apart from the rest. We’ve seen actioncams with laser-assisted alignment, extra-wide lenses and anti-glare LCD screens, just to name a few. With the gobandit GPSHD, we’re about to see a camera that offers something else yet - a recorded onscreen display of the location, altitude and speed at which your footage was shot.
As its name implies, the GPSHD contains a GPS, and records in 720p HD. It has 2 gigabytes of internal memory, with space for SD cards up to 32 gigs. It’s waterproof up to one meter, and can be mounted on helmets, goggles and other sporty locations. It also has a remote control, so you can start and stop it if it’s somewhere out of reach, such as on the outside of a car.
The gobandit’s rear LCD screen shows your current speed and altitude, battery status, satellite reception, and what appears to be a viewfinder display.
When you download your footage into your Mac or PC, the gobandit’s editing software offers you a choice of a number of “skins”, which are funky-looking borders. Depending on how much of an infomaniac you are, the skin can display data such as height, location, speed and maximum speed. Once you’ve edited your footage with its added chosen skin, you can post it to gobandit’s website, YouTube, or wherever you wish.
The gobandit GPSHD will be available in June throughout Europe, the US and Australia. According to engadget, it should sell for about $US389.
