Light bulbs – we all need them, but truth be told, they're just a little bit boring. Smartbunch is hoping to change that with its modular light that lets you design your own table lamps and overhead lights with its LED triangles that snap together to make all manner of 3D shapes.

Thanks to a research partnership with the municipality of Dubai, Philips has developed a range of LED bulbs that are claimed to reduce electricity consumption by up to 90 percent when compared to incandescent bulbs and will last up to 15 time longer, too.​

Looking to add further functionality to its range of smartphone-controlled hue light bulbs, Philips has announced a kinetic-powered switch to extend control over color settings to times when your smart device might be out of reach.

While you may not have to worry about your rechargeable flashlight's batteries being dead when you finally need to use it, it does spend most of its time occupying an outlet, doing nothing. MoMA's Bulb Flashlight, on the other hand, doubles as an LED light bulb.

If NliteN’s disk-shaped 2D-Lite reaches production, it could make other LED light bulbs look downright expensive. Initially slated to sell for $10, the dimmable 60-watt-equivalent "800 lumen-class" bulb is planned to drop to $6 by 2015, and to $3 by 2017.
