Medium Format Cameras

​Last year, Italy's Samuel Mello Medeiros hit Kickstarter with a chunky add-on that gave old 35 mm cameras a new lease of digital life. Now he's returned with a camera back that performs similar magic on classic medium format cameras like those from Hasselblad, Mamiya and Zenza Bronica.​

​Hasselblad marked its 75th birthday with the release of the X1D in 2016, which was billed as the world's first compact mirrorless medium format camera. Now the company has announced the new X1D II 50C – with improved usability, better performance and a cheaper price tag.​

​Last year, Fujifilm teased the GFX100Megapixels Concept, featuring a large sensor about 1.7 times the size of a full-frame image sensor and capable of recording 4K video. Now the company has announced a late June release for its new 102 megapixel medium format flagship, the GFX100.​

​Fujifilm has had quite a busy Photokina 2018 so far, announcing a new instant camera, an upcoming projector sporting a rotating Fujinon lens and a new GFX medium format series flagship. The company also outlined plans for the development of a 100 megapixel medium format concept.​

​Fujifilm has announced a more portable version of its GFX 50S medium format mirrorless camera from last year. The 50R has essentially the same internals as its predecessor, all squeezed into a rangefinder style body. But Fujifilm has taken the opportunity to include a few modest upgrades.​

In an interesting change of focus (yuk yuk), Hasselblad is opening its high-end imaging tools up to a wider range of people than ever before. And it begins with the X1D, the world's smallest and most portable mirrorless medium format camera. A medium format for the masses, almost.

​As evidenced by SkyPixel's best of 2017, drones have opened up a new means of expression for creative photographers. Denmark's Phase One isn't pitching its latest drone camera at enthusiasts though, the iXM 100MP metric camera has been designed for mapping, surveying and inspection applications.​

Hasselblad has gathered together tools and accessories photographers might need to get the best from its X1D camera, and put them all in a tough Pelican case. The X1D Field Kit comes with the $9,000 camera, three lenses, spare batteries, cleaning materials and straps. And yes, it's expensive.​

Hasselblad has announced its latest medium-format aerial camera system, the A6D-100c. Designed for surveying and mapping users, the new camera boasts a 100-megapixel resolution and the ability to synchronize eight cameras to shoot within 20 microseconds of each other.

The Phase One IQ3 100MP Achromatic is a 101-megapixel digital medium format back which only captures images in black and white. Billed as the world’s highest resolution achromatic digital back it boasts features including a top ISO of 51,200.

While the Hasselblad X1D is surprisingly compact for a medium format camera, it’s not at all small when it comes to photographic ability. We recently got the chance to go hands-on with the camera at Photokina, and are now even more smitten than we were before.

Fujifilm has announced that it is has developed a new mirrorless medium format camera system. The GFX system will launch in 2017 with the GFX 50S which features a 51.4-megapixel sensor measuring 43.8 x 32.9 mm.
