Watch out GoPro, JVC is looking to take a bite out of the action cam market with its rugged new JVC GC-XA1 ADIXXION camcorder. Leveraging its decades-long digital imaging prowess evidenced in models like the ProHD cams and GC-PX10 hybrid, the company says that its new small and lightweight video recorder includes a range of features that leaves the competition behind. Highlights include four levels of rugged protection, built-in Wi-Fi, a Super Wide lens, and Full HD video recording.
The GC-XA1 has been waterproofed to a depth of 16.4 feet (5 m), is able to withstand a fall from 6.5 feet (2 m), and is both dust- and freeze-proof. It's a collection of all-round ruggedness that JVC is calling Quad Proof and means that the camcorder can record 1920 x 1080/30p video at 30 frames per second (fps) to MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 format, or 60 fps at 720p, in a variety of action scenarios without the need for optional housing to protect it from the elements.
The pocket-friendly 2.9 x 2 x 1.3-inch (74 x 53 x 35 mm), 0.28 pound (126g) action cam features a 5 megapixel CMOS sensor, 170 degree fixed focus lens, 5x digital zoom, a 1.5-inch LCD monitor to the side, digital image stabilization to help reduce camera shake and rolling shutter cancellation that's said to correct image skewing that sometimes occurs with CMOS sensors. There's both auto and manual white balance and auto exposure, a self-timer function and time-lapse recording.
In addition to USB and HDMI ports, the GC-XA1 also benefits from built-in wireless capabilities which allow for wireless connection to a smartphone for image monitoring and remote control functionality via free-to-download iOS and Android apps, and the transfer of data to a PC without having to remember to pack the cables. Users can opt to send images to social networks through a PC or can live stream footage to USTREAM direct from the cam itself.
The JVC GC-XA1 ADIXXION action cam will be available during Q3 for US$349.95, and will come supplied with a goggle mount and flexible mount, two lens protectors, LCD protection film, a USB cable and a rechargeable battery. Wi-Video PC software is also provided.
Optional accessories include a roll bar mount, a handlebar mount, an AC power adapter and a float strap to help the camera float when in water.
