Smartphones and tablets have made it easier than ever to enjoy a little video entertainment wherever we may find ourselves. But in recent years we've seen projectors shrink down to a size that allows those that crave a larger display to effectively carry one around with them. The latest to join the list is LG's Bluetooth MiniBeam projector.

Measuring a 6.7 x 4.6 x 1.6 in (172 x 117 x 40 mm) in size and tipping the scales at 20 oz (580 g), LG's offering isn't quite compact enough to stick in a pocket like the Allcam CP1, Pocket Projector, or even Samsung's Galaxy Beam projector phone. But where the images from those devices top out at 50 to 60 in (127 to 152 cm) diagonally, the Bluetooth MiniBeam can project images measuring from 25 to 100 in (63.5 to 254 cm) onto an available surface.

With an LED light source, the MiniBeam projector boasts a brightness of 700 ANSI-Lumens, a 100,000:1 contrast ratio and 1,280 x 800 pixel resolution. Connectivity options include USB, HDMI, RGB, Component and AV inputs with support for WiDi and Miracast. The inclusion of Bluetooth 3.0 also allows audio to be streamed wirelessly from the device to a Bluetooth-enabled audio system or headphones – however, the device has two 1 W speakers built in if no such options are available.

LG will be displaying the Bluetooth MiniBeam at IFA next month, with sales in some European markets to also kick off in September. This will be followed by a wider release in Asia and the Middle East. Pricing details are yet to be announced.

First and foremost is about lumens not "projection size", 2nd is portability - 3rd is price -so maybe we will finally see pocket projectors that are worth the time to investigate, and maybe even buy...
