As the second World Humanoid Robot Games got under way on August 21 at Beijing’s National Speed Skating Oval, most of the interest has been on the machine sprinters and boxers. But away from the sporting arena, the five-day games reveal something telling about why China's winning this technology race.

The games, which this year involve 666 different teams and 2,056 humanoids, will see the robots take part in 30 competitive events and nearly as many showcase and demonstrative shows. The event also serves as a defining marker of where the industry is at in 2026. While we're nowhere near reaching the potential of this technology, you only have to look at the 2025 games highlights to see what a difference 12 months makes.

The biggest news so far has been the humanoid named Lightning, made by phone company Honor, who beat Usain Bolt's world record in the 100-m sprint. Lightning crossed the finish line in 9.32 seconds, with Bolt's 17-year record still unbeaten by any human, at 9.58 seconds.

In April this year, Honor humanoids won big in the Beijing robot half-marathon event, not just for speed but for best gait and design. These aspects to humanoid design have become the next stage of humanoid "growth" across the industry.

The key part here isn't the record but the robot's origin story. When I first started writing about Chinese technology, it seemed so strange that a company like Xiaomi and Xpeng would be making cars, phones and robots. And now eVTOLs.

But China's technology supply chain is unlike anything else on the planet – and it's one that enables this kind of diversification that seems to actually benefit, not hinder, each product, be it a phone or a robot. On top of this, events like the World Humanoid Robot Games encourage engineers to compare notes and learn from each other. In 2024, an initiative was launched to facilitate data sharing between humanoid startups and companies.

Of course the likes of Unitree and UBtech are eager to dominate the local and export markets, so there's certainly healthy competition. But they exist in an unusual ecosystem that is able to support hundreds of teams building robots in 2026.

“In my view, China’s supply chain is exceptionally complete," Jin Yongbin, Chief Technology Office of MirrorMe Technology, who took their humanoid Bolt to the Beijing games, told CCTV (translated to English). "For the entire robot system, its motors, batteries, electric drives and transmission systems, are perfectly aligned with the existing automotive industry’s supply chain. We are essentially transferring our established automotive supply chain to robotics."

Jin's company MirrorMe has developed a 175-cm (68.9-in)-tall 75-kg (165-lb) sprinter named “Bolt”, capable of reaching speeds of 11 meters per second (36 ft/s). Not as quick as Lightning proved to be, but speed is only part of the story.

“Speed is not just about velocity; it is actually a synthesis of a series of engineering limits – intensity, toughness, strength, fluidity and more,” Jin explained. “More importantly, achieving speed is about breaking the limits of existing cognition – examining the biological motion mechanisms behind it, understanding what the dynamic mechanisms look like, and determining whether we can harness these mechanisms.

“Moreover, we need to rely on events like this to continuously exchange ideas, evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different technologies, and rapidly refine the robotics supply chain," Jin added.

This is another key difference seen in China's robotics and AI industries. Sure, there's healthy competition – and a news-making win at the Beijing games is excellent promotion – but this tech development feels more like a countrywide team effort, where engineers are learning from and collaborating with engineers across company lines.

Ultimately, the so-called "robot arms ace" between the US and China is lazy at best. Both countries are rapidly advancing, there's no doubt about that – but it's more like they're running different races in separate events.

The US has become uncompetitive in many areas as the current Administration lives in the past and focuses on coal generating stations and internal combustion engine vehicles.

The reason the US is not competing in the humanoid robot race is because there isn't enough interest in the youth of our country.
TikTok (and the copycats chasing its popularity) is doing its job of distracting kids from doing anything more challenging that getting more views. Just like China planned it.
If we want to get out of this rut, we need to be encouraging kids to do more tech based stuff. Currently the only thing even close is FIRST Robotics.
Contrary to the people blaming "The current administration" this isn't the governments fault. Although you can make an argument that the Dept of Ed focusing on everything BUT science, engineering, and math in schools is at fault.

Well SGTalon it’s a complex story that goes back some way and certainly is deeply rooted in the education and the distractions of westernised culture, but TikTok is/was Chinese and Chinese kids are technology crazy like their western. Counterparts . Engineering is deemed integral to this however unlike western kids who are more interested in playing with the tech rather than creating it, influencers over true creators. However this problem is certainly being greatly exacerbated by the present Administration because it is making University education and research (life generally indeed) much more difficult for those born elsewhere who have been the lifeblood of much of US technology research pre Isley because US kids don’t prize engineering any more. Both the Chinese and Indians have been effectively told they aren’t wanted and many are going home leaving big holes. Neil Degrasse Tyson has in particular decried this self damaging policy but I fear the damage is already done, the US is no longer the welcoming place or haven for foreign talent any more, a reverse brain drain is taking place and I can’t see that changing any time soon.

"Humanoid" robots designed specifically to compete in Olympic-style events like running, jumping, dancing, gymnastics, and playing table-tennis or soccer have little practical value, but it shows that they're getting good at advancing AI to parrot human movements. China lags the rest of the world in sales of industrial robots, which is currently dominated by Japan, Germany, and Sweden, but the market is rapidly evolving. Unitree in Hangzhou is becoming the DJI of quadruped robotics, targeting consumers instead of companies with technology that mimics and improves on Boston Dynamic's pioneering robots. Innovation in many fields is accelerating in the U.S. (energy, agriculture, tech, AI, manufacturing, medicine, etc.) thanks to the current administration removing artificial barriers imposed by previous ones that hobbled it to conform to their political whims.

Shoot, the youth in America are too busy with tik-tok, instagram, 3,293 selfies, wanting everything for free to worry about anything like that. Plus, the CCP government WANTS that, which is just the spark their "people" need wink wink.

One more key difference. The Chinese public embraces technology. Meanwhile, Americans are becoming technophobes, with much of the public calling AI useless. (Minor tip: please don't convert to ft/s as units for speed. Nobody ever thinks in such terms. The standard Imperial unit for speed has always been MPH - miles per hour. For that matter, m/s is also pretty useless for non-scientists. Metric speedometers are calibrated in KPH.)

This article couldn't be more unquestioningly pro-China. If one doesn't simply rely on the curated propaganda videos coming out of China, there are plenty of videos online of erratic, spastic Chinese robots falling over and otherwise running amok in that country. More often than not, Chinese bipedal robots are a promise delivered already broken. In truth China is not significantly more advanced in the area of robotics than the West. Where they excel is quickly pumping out a lot of cheap robotics which have their foundation in IP stolen from the West. Whether or not all of these Chinese robotics companies (all of which are beholden to and subsidized by the CCP) are profitable is a question no one seems to ever ask. One would think that it would be easy to profit when you don't have to worry about things like developing your own IP, worker health and safety, environmental regulations, an ethically sourced supply chain, or liability when your products fail and people are injured or killed.

Well the US has to play the same game as China has done for so many years - other countries mean nothing to them, and when they break patent laws there is zero repercussion. So the US companies just need to buy their best products, reverse engineer them, and incorporate their best builds into their products they make here in the USA. Quite the easy obvious answer, and it makes ZERO sense that we are not doing it full bore As far as the Gov. kicking China out of the high tech. education in hopes some will stay and benefit our country, well all it takes is the top 5% of the Chinese engineers to go back home, as their Gov. dictates, then they go home and train people their as they do, then they advance farther each year, and need our colleges less, and less anyway. So ya, shut em down.

@aksdad, you are mistaken. In fact, Unitree started with quadriped bots and they're shifting their focus to humanoid bots. Quads have little practical value in the real world. Humanoids have tremendous value. If you want to place robots in people's homes, you need to make them capable of operating in people's homes. It's one thing to configure a factory just the way you need it to accommodate industrial robots of any shape. But homes are designed for people, and nobody is going to have their home rebuilt so a robot can work in it, A quadriped can't turn a doorknob, can't lift anything. A Roomba can't navigate stairs.
