Otterbox has a well earned reputation for producing high-quality protective cases for mobile gear and its latest range for iPhone 4 and BlackBerry Curve – the Reflex Series – has just been announced at CES. The new design is made up of a single layer of polycarbonate and TPE rubber which surrounds your smartphone with an air cushion "crumplezone" so that in the event of a bump, the case recoils and springs back again.

The Reflex Series slender design makes it a far less chunky alternative to the company's top-level Defender protective cases while still offering a reasonable level of protection – in testing, impact forces are reduced 3-fold according to Otterbox.

Another welcome feature of the Reflex design is that it snaps apart in two halves, meaning you don't have to remove the whole case when docking your phone.

Otterbox Reflex Series for Apple iPhone 4 specs:

  • Colors: Urban Gray/Black, Pink/Black
  • Dimensions: 4.75” (120.65 mm) x 2.522” (64.05 mm) x 0.528” (13.4 mm)
  • Approximate Weight: 0.78 oz (22 g)
  • Otterbox Reflex Series for BlackBerry Curve 8500/9300 specs:

    • Colors: Urban Gray/Black, Pink/Black
  • Dimensions (case only): 4.424” (112.37 mm) x 2.554” (64.88 mm) x 0.717” (18.21 mm)
  • Approximate Weight: 0.95 oz (27 g)
  • No word as yet on a release date or pricing – we'll keep you posted.

It would be interesting to see the g force load reduction onto hard surfaces. Those gel cover type cases actually do a very good job of reducing g force exposure for items like phones, from thousands of g\'s to hundreds as a result of having the mm or so to slow down in and thats all it takes usually to prevent damage. Otterbox doesn\'t appear to advertise compliance with Mil-Std\'s or anything like that, but it would definitely be good to see something less subjective.
