Sony announced a new addition to it RX camera line at IFA 2017 in Berlin earlier today. The 15 MP RX0 sports a wide-angle Zeiss lens, rugged compact body and sits somewhere between an actioncam and a tough compact, with Sony reckoning that this is the shape of cameras to come.

Sony says the RX0 is a new type of camera that opens up "entirely new imaging possibilities." It's not much bigger than a GoPro – at 59 x 40.5 x 29.8 mm (2.3 x 1.6 x 1.1 in) – and tips the scales at 110 g (3.8 oz). Like that well-known actioncam, it's adventure-ready, too. It's waterproof to 10 m (33 ft) on its own, or up to 100 m in when encased in the new MPK-HSR1 housing, is capable of brushing off a 2 m (6.5 ft) drop and crushproof up to 200 kgf (440 lbf).

Inside the rugged chassis, Sony has squeezed in a 15.3 MP Exmor RS CMOS (13.2 x 8.8 mm) sensor and Bionz X image processor. Out front is a wide-angle Zeiss TessarT 24mm F4 fixed lens with a 1/32,000 second anti-distortion shutter. The RX0 can shoot at up to 16 frames per second, has a low-light-friendly ISO 125 to 12,800 range and can capture RAW and JPEG images. HD video at up to 60 fps is on tap, though super slow motion is also available at up to 1,000 fps.

The camera has a 1.5 in (38 mm), 230,400 dot LCD display panel to the rear, and comes with built-in Bluetooth 4.1 and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi. It can be used on its own or as part of a multicam setup, for capturing stills or video from different perspectives, with Sony's wireless radio commander capable of triggering up to 15 RX0s. And up to five cameras can be connected simultaneously to the PlayMemories mobile app, more if a still-in-development wireless access point is utilized.

The RX0 will be available in Europe from October for about €850 (roughly US$1,000). You can see the new Cyber-shot camera in the video below.

I love action cameras, but why would I buy this when the Hero5 already shoots HD at 120fps and 4k at 30fps? And I guess the Hero6 will do 4k at 60fps.
