There are few things more frustrating than waking in the middle of the night feeling hot, sticky and uncomfortable. While room temperature, bedding and sleepwear all play a part, the mattress beneath you can also affect how much heat builds up around your body.

That presents a particular challenge for memory foam. Its ability to contour closely to the body is precisely what makes the material comfortable for many sleepers, but that close contact can also trap warmth. Cooling from the surface down

At the heart of the CoolNest Ultra is what SweetNight calls its Advanced CoolNest Ultra System, an upgraded five-stage cooling design intended to manage heat in several different ways rather than relying on a single cooling layer.

It begins at the mattress surface with a Gradient Cooling Ice Silk Cover. SweetNight gives the fabric a Qmax rating of up to 0.25 J/(cm²·s), a measurement related to the initial transfer of heat when skin contacts a material. According to the company, that's 47% higher than the 0.17 figure it cites for standard cooling fabrics. The cover also incorporates more than 10,000 micropores per square centimeter, designed to help heat and moisture escape.

Below it sits PCMflux® High Resilience Foam, containing phase-change material (PCM) and gel particles. Phase-change materials absorb and release thermal energy as they change physical state, and here the idea is to help moderate temperature changes over the course of the night. SweetNight says the new foam contains twice as much PCM and gel particles as its traditional formulations, while a large-pore internal structure is designed to increase airflow.

A ventilated gel memory-foam layer provides another mechanism for moving heat away from the sleeper. It contains 30% gel particles and more than 700 ventilation openings, according to SweetNight, combining heat absorption with physical pathways through which warm air can escape.

Making memory foam breathe

Cooling materials can only do so much if warm air remains trapped inside a mattress, so ventilation makes up another substantial part of the design.

SweetNight's AirMesh™ Breathable Memory Foam uses an open, hollow-mesh structure that the company says offers up to six times the breathability of traditional closed-cell memory foam, while retaining the contouring and pressure-relieving qualities expected of the material.

Rather than treating these layers independently, the mattress is constructed as a three-dimensional ventilation system. Micropores in the cover allow heat and moisture to leave the surface, larger pores and perforations create airflow through the comfort layers, and a wave-shaped structure farther down creates additional channels through the support layer. The result is intended to keep air moving through the mattress instead of allowing heat to accumulate around the body.

Based on SweetNight Lab test results, the complete system delivers sleep comfort that's up to 11° cooler.

Seven zones of support

Temperature isn't the only consideration when choosing a mattress, of course. Underneath the cooling and comfort layers, the CoolNest Ultra uses wave-cut foam divided into seven ergonomic zones corresponding to the head, shoulders, back, waist, hips, legs and feet.

The different zones are intended to distribute body weight while supporting the body's natural contours, promoting spinal alignment and reducing pressure around areas that bear more load. Beneath that sits a high-density support-foam foundation designed to limit sagging and compression over time, along with a textured anti-slip base to reduce movement on the bed frame.

The construction also helps explain the range of sleepers SweetNight is targeting. Alongside people who simply sleep hot, the company identifies side sleepers, larger-bodied sleepers, athletes and active people, couples and light sleepers among the intended users.

Sizes, firmness and materials

The CoolNest Ultra comes in Queen and King sizes and three thicknesses: 12, 14 and 16 inches. The 12-inch version has a medium feel, while the two thicker models are rated medium-plush. Prices listed in SweetNight's product brief range from US$729.99 to US$1,029.99.

The mattress uses OEKO-TEX® certified fabric and CertiPUR-US® certified foams and is fiberglass-free. Its complete seven-part construction runs from the cooling cover and specialized comfort foams through the zoned support and stability layers to the anti-slip base.
