Thanks to the magic of the internet, we’re more connected with one another than ever before. However, our network usage increases tremendously each year. Most home networks are powered with 1G broadband, but these speeds simply won’t keep up with our growing demands.

But where is this demand coming from? The simple answer is… you! Video streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon have exploded in the last decade and currently amount to about 70% of all internet traffic, and these numbers are expected to quadruple by 2022. Pair that with the fact that modern homes are adapting smart devices faster than ever before, and the average household is expected to contain around 50 connected devices by 2020 — it’s no wonder data use has gone through the rough (pun intended.)

That’s why the NCTA, or the Internet and Television Association, is urging our cable companies to pursue 10G broadband. In essence, 10G means 10 gigabytes per second speeds, which is 10 times faster than the 1G speeds most cable companies currently offer. Thankfully, the 10G initiative is happening sooner than you think. Current cable companies are building fiber-rich infrastructures that will soon power 85% of US homes, and field trials will begin as soon as next year.

On the surface, 10G broadband will solve issues for streamers, gamers, and content creators, but it also leads to deeper innovation across the board. 10G makes it possible for data-heavy VR and AR experiences to run without being bottlenecked by our current network constraints. This means that educators could use this technology to present immersive experiences using holodecks and head-mounted displays. Fast, reliable broadband can also give healthcare providers remote diagnostics on patients, eliminating costly travel expenses and making healthcare significantly more accessible.

The possibilities are endless, and this is only the beginning — 10G has the potential to change the way we live. You can learn more about how 10G is critical to our future by visiting 10Gplatform.com.
