In long-awaited news for Instagram devotees looking for something a little more tangible to archive their favorite moments, the Polaroid Socialmatic is now available for preorder. The camera has the ability to capture and print photos much like the original Polaroid cameras, but is equipped with Wi-Fi to enable sharing over the internet.
The camera was first unveiled as a concept back in May 2013 and in the time since, has had its appearance and specs fine-tuned for launch. The market-ready device weighs 1.2 lb (544 g) and sports a 14-megapixel-forward facing camera, with a 2-megapixel selfie-snapper on the other side. Prints measure 2 x 3 in (5.1 x 7.6 cm) and are spat out with the push of a button.
Equipped with GPS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the Socialmatic camera is capable of photo-geotagging and remote printing. Running on Android OS with a 4.5-inch color touch screen, the camera can also function as a computer allowing users to browse the internet and access email. It is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery and comes with 4 GB of onboard storage that can be extended to up to 32 GB via MicroSD card.
The Socialmatic camera is priced at US$299 and is available for preorder now in black or white from various online retailers. Amazon will ship from January 1, but if you can wait a little longer Photojojo will start shipping from January 12 and throw 10 prints in for your trouble.
