Self-balancing

We’ve seen a few iterations of Future Motion’s Onewheel since it rolled into the urban mobility scene five years ago, but the new model introduced today is the lightest and most affordable yet.

Judging by the success of the Scrooser and the Phatty, people do like the idea of fat-tired electric scooters. California-based skateboarder/cyclist/product designer Nathan Allen is now attempting to join the throng, with the interesting-looking and apparently self-balancing Stator.

Self-balancing electric scooters may be a handy way of getting around, but the things can be kind of bulky when you want to carry or stow them. A German startup is now offering a solution to that problem, in the form of the folding UrmO.

Fans of human-powered transport can already choose between having both feet on a skateboard, or each foot in a rollerblade. If you're more into motorized self-balancing devices, though, you've been pretty much stuck putting both feet on a Segway-like hoverboard. That's not the case with Hovershoes.

John Dingley, the guy behind last year's electric luge, has been in the workshop again. This time he's been working on a new version of his self-balancing electric unicycle. Similar to the Ryno, but home built and using a brushless motor.

Futuristically enough, there are now several one-wheeled self-balancing scooters in various stages of production. That said, not all of them are available for purchase just yet, so the announcement of a new one is still something to take note of. With that in mind, meet the Uno Bolt.

The Segway first raised eyebrows by balancing its rider on two side-by-side wheels. Since then, we've also seen scooters where you balance on a single wheel. Well, the Üo does things a little differently yet. It perches its rider on top of a rolling rubber ball.

One of the cutest things we've seen at CES 2017 is Honda's self-balancing motorcycle - a modified NC750S that uses technology derived from Honda's self-balancing unicycles to keep itself upright. Plus, it can follow you around like a puppy at walking pace, which is adorable.

Are you one of those people who like the idea of a motorcycle, but aren't comfortable with the whole "keeping your balance" thing? If you are, then Thrustcycle Enterprises' self-balancing GyroCycle may be for you.

A New Zealand designer is revamping the traditional wheelchair design with a new model that frees the arms of the user. Instead of using the hands to create movement, the user moves their upper body to direct the two wheels.
-
We may still be waiting for the first true hoverboards, but one firm says its single-wheeler feels so like hovering that it's actually called the Hoverboard. The board is mounted atop a 10-in wheel, with users leaning forward to accelerate and backwards to decelerate or change direction.

We test a MiPsaur robot that balances on two wheels like a Segway. It has several different ways to play, including its own interactive moving ball, a battle mode with other robots, and varying moods.
